Where does the name leather carp come from?

I've always wondered where the name 'Leather Carp' comes from. Can anyone help fill me in on the background on it's name?

  • The term leather carp refers to the smooth body of the fish, which is completely scaleless.

    Because the leather carp has no scales, it's body has a 'leathery' like skin, which is where it's name comes from.
